Ballardites celebrate grandson’s release from Iranian jail | Community Spirit
Title (Max 100 Charaters)
On his birthday two years ago, Ballard Landmark resident Carroll Felleman learned his grandson Josh Fattal, an American hiker, had been captured and imprisoned in Iran. Yesterday, Felleman was able to celebrate his grandson’s freedom.
“We are delighted with the turn of events that have led to his release and are happy to share our happiness with you,” Felleman told his fellow residents during a Sept. 26 party at the Ballard Landmark where he lives with his wife Muriel.
The party was a way for the Fellemans to thank their neighbors for their sympathy and support over the past 26 months. He said it was a nice experience being at the Landmark during this ordeal because its residents were happy to sweat it out with them.
“This is a very lovely community,” Felleman said.
Fattal was imprisoned with fellow hiker Shane Bauer when the two were caught hiking near the Iranian border.
“Since that time, we’ve been watching every political thought and activity between the United States and Iran,” Felleman said. “We are most appreciative to the United States government for keeping our daughter informed as to what was going on and keeping our hopes alive that this would come to an end.”
Felleman was able to speak to Fattal shortly after his release last week. He said his grandson was looking forward to going on with his life and returning to normalcy.
“He sounded marvelous,” Felleman said.
