200-year-old boat back in the water for Norway Day
A 200-year-old Viking-style boat will be rededicated Sunday as part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of Norway Day.
The Nordic Spirit will be rowed from its current location at the Pacific Fishermen Shipyard across Salmon Bay to Fisherman's Terminal for the event, scheduled for 2 p.m. It has been undergoing restoration for the past 10 months, including New planks, 10 gallons of pine tar and new copper rivets.
The boat was originally built as a fishing boat in Norway in the early 1800s, but was adapted to a Viking design in the 1960s.
The ceremony will be attended by the Norwegian Consul, Kim Nesselquist, local dignitaries and music from the Norwegian Male Chorus and the Norwegian Ladies Chorus.
Norway Day was a major event at the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, Seattle's first world's fair.
